At Colonna's Shipyard we promote a culture of ethics among our employees and business partners.
3 YEARS
The original Machine Shop next to the front gate was built in 1920 using wheelbarrows and ramps to pour the concrete. The machines at the time were all cast iron flat belt driven macines. There was a single 3.5 ton hand operated overhead crane that serviced the shop. At the time the shop was considered one of the largest and best shops on the east coast. "Every machine except one in the shop has been replaced during the last 24 years that I have been involved in the shop" said Greg Eddins, Machine Shop Manger. The old weld lathe is the oldest original machine and is still used daily. This machine dates in the late 19th century. The machine shop used to rely on the shipyard for almost all of its work. Since Steel America was created the shop has more than doubled in size and capabilties. The new shop has 100 tons of crane capacity and pieces of equipment in excess of 100,000 pounds are common. The majority of work now cmes from customers outside the shipyard. IMS currently has units in the shop from as far away as Alaska. Currently IMS also has two 5 year contracts with the government for repairs to various propulsion shafts, rudders and fin stabilizers. The shop is also involved in a three year modernization and upgrade to the John Kerr Hydro Electric Power Plant. With the help of our highly trained and talented staff, the Inside Machine Shop is once again considered one of the largest and best machine shops not only on the east coast but the entire country.
